Magnesium Magic: Soothe Your Body & Soul Naturally

By Anna Rademaker, IBCLC, LMT | Sacred Mama Denver

Relieve stress, ease sore muscles, and nurture your nervous system—naturally.

Let’s be real—whether you’re growing a baby, chasing a toddler, getting back to the gym, or just carrying the weight of daily life, your body is doing a lot. Sore muscles, tight shoulders, and restless legs? Magnesium might just be the mineral your body’s been craving.

Why Magnesium?

Magnesium is essential for muscle relaxation, nerve function, and stress regulation. Unfortunately, many of us are low on this vital mineral—especially during pregnancy, postpartum recovery, or times of physical or emotional stress. Supplementing topically (through the skin) allows the body to absorb what it needs without overwhelming the digestive system.

Magnesium Oil

Magnesium oil is actually a high-concentration brine—not a true oil—but it delivers quick, powerful relief.

  • Best for: Direct muscle relief, nighttime leg cramps (hello, pregnancy!), and stress support.

  • How to use: Spray directly on skin (legs, belly, shoulders, feet) and rub in. Some tingling is normal if levels are low—dilute with a carrier oil if needed.

  • Great for:

    • Mamas-to-be with calf cramps

    • Athletes with tight quads or sore backs

    • Anyone who needs to decompress before bed

Magnesium Lotion

Magnesium lotion offers a gentler application, infused with nourishing oils and butters for added hydration.

  • Best for: Full-body use, bedtime wind-down, and anyone with sensitive skin.

  • How to use: Massage into feet, legs, shoulders, or anywhere tension lives.

  • Great for:

    • New parents recovering from long days (and nights!)

    • Dry skin sufferers

    • Anyone needing a calming nighttime ritual

Epsom Salt Soak

Epsom salts are rich in magnesium sulfate, perfect for a full-body reset. Soaking is a beautiful way to relax sore muscles, calm the nervous system, and support detoxification.

  • Best for: Deep muscle relief, mental stress, and overall relaxation.

  • How to use: Add 1–2 cups to a warm bath. Soak for at least 20 minutes. Add a few drops of lavender essential oil for extra zen.

  • Great for:

    • Postpartum healing

    • Sore feet after standing all day

    • Anyone easing back into movement or dealing with general aches & pains

💕 Thoughtfully Made, Mama-Inspired

At Sacred Mama Denver, I handcraft magnesium sprays, lotions, and bath soaks using organic ingredients, pure essential oils, and a whole lot of love. These products are safe for most skin types and make a beautiful addition to your self-care routine—whether you’re a new parent, a busy professional, or simply someone who needs a little more ease in your body.

Available for local pickup or to take home after your massage treatment.
✨ Bring the relaxation home with you—your nervous system will thank you.

Why Tongue-Tie Matters Beyond Breastfeeding

By Anna Rademaker, IBCLC, LMT | Sacred Mama Denver

Tongue-tie isn’t just about feeding—it can affect a child’s sleep, breathing, speech, jaw development, and overall health if left untreated.

Feeding Challenges: Babies with tongue-tie often struggle to latch, transfer milk efficiently, or feed comfortably, leading to nipple pain, reflux, and slow weight gain.

Eating & Digestion: As babies grow, tongue restriction can cause difficulty chewing, gagging, food aversions, and digestive issues.

Sleep & Breathing: A restricted tongue often leads to mouth breathing, snoring, restless sleep, and even sleep apnea, which can impact energy levels and behavior.

Jaw & Facial Development: The tongue helps shape the palate and jaw. Without proper function, a child may develop a narrow palate, crowded teeth, or a recessed chin, increasing the need for orthodontics later.

Speech & Communication: The tongue plays a key role in forming sounds like L, R, T, D, and S. Tongue-tie can contribute to speech delays, lisps, or difficulty articulating words.

Tension & Jaw Issues: Tongue restriction can cause jaw pain, clenching, grinding, and even headaches due to poor oral posture and muscle compensation.

Long-Term Health Impacts: Chronic mouth breathing (often linked to tongue-tie) can lower oxygen levels, impact focus, and even contribute to behavioral challenges.

Early assessment and treatment—along with feeding and oral function support—can help prevent these challenges and set your child up for lifelong health.

My Baby’s Latch isn’t right— how do I know if they have a tongue tie??

By Anna Rademaker, IBCLC, LMT | Sacred Mama Denver

A baby with a tongue-tie (ankyloglossia) or lip-tie may show several signs, especially related to feeding challenges. And I urge- this not just a breastfeeding issue— airway, breathing, speech, digestion/ eating, facial formation, etc. Please see my related blog post.

Signs in the Baby:

  • Difficulty latching onto the breast or bottle, often popping off

  • Shallow latch that causes discomfort for the parent

  • Poor milk transfer leading to slow weight gain and frequent feeding sessions

  • Clicking sounds while feeding due to loss of suction

  • Excessive gassiness or reflux from swallowing air

  • Fatigue while feeding, falling asleep quickly but waking up hungry

  • Choking, coughing, or gagging while nursing or bottle-feeding

  • Milk dribbling from the mouth during feeding

  • Gumming or chewing on the nipple instead of sucking effectively

Signs in the Nursing Parent:

  • Nipple pain, cracks, or distortion after feeds

  • Engorgement, plugged ducts, or mastitis from poor milk removal

  • Decreased milk supply due to ineffective stimulation

Physical Signs in the Baby’s Mouth:

  • Tongue-tie: The tongue may have a heart-shaped or notched appearance when lifted, with limited movement, making it difficult to extend or raise.

  • Lip-tie: The upper lip may appear tight or stiff, unable to flange outward while feeding, with a thick band of tissue connecting the lip to the gum. Some babies also develop blisters on their lips from excessive friction.

Let’s Get You Set Up to Succeed

If you are concerned or have questions about your baby’s latch, if they might have a tongue tie or TOTS, please do not hesitate to reach out to me!!

Clogged Ducts & Mastitis: What to Watch For—and How to Feel Better, Fast

By Anna Rademaker, IBCLC & LMT | Sacred Mama Denver

Breastfeeding is powerful, beautiful, and... sometimes uncomfortable.
If you’ve ever felt a tender lump in your breast or a sudden wave of flu-like symptoms while nursing, you’re not alone. These can be signs of a clogged duct or mastitis, both of which are common—but treatable—challenges during lactation.

As an IBCLC and massage therapist, I’ve helped many parents recognize the signs early, prevent complications, and feel better quickly. Let’s break it down together.

What Is a Clogged Duct?

A clogged duct occurs when milk gets backed up in part of the breast, usually due to poor drainage. This can happen from:

  • Infrequent or skipped feedings

  • Pressure on the breast (tight bra, baby carrier, or sleeping position)

  • Inefficient latch or pumping

  • Stress or fatigue (hello, postpartum life)

You might feel a small lump, soreness, or localized fullness. The skin may look slightly red, but you typically won’t have a fever at this point.

Signs It’s Turning Into Mastitis

Mastitis happens when a clogged duct becomes inflamed or infected. It often comes on fast and can make you feel pretty awful. Watch for:

  • A hard, hot, or painful area on the breast

  • Redness or streaking

  • Fever, chills, and body aches

  • Fatigue and flu-like symptoms

If you think you have mastitis, don’t wait—contact your care provider. Antibiotics or other medical treatment may be needed, and early action can prevent complications.

How to Prevent Clogged Ducts

  • Feed or pump often—avoid long stretches without milk removal

  • Use varied nursing positions to help drain all areas of the breast

  • Loosen tight clothing or bras

  • Stay hydrated and nourished

  • Rest—yes, it’s hard, but your body needs it

And here’s a powerful tool many parents don’t know about:

How Lymphatic Drainage Massage Helps

Lymphatic drainage massage is a gentle, non-invasive technique that supports your body’s natural fluid movement. It’s not deep tissue, and it’s not aggressive—it’s soothing, light, and incredibly effective for:

  • Reducing swelling and inflammation around clogged ducts

  • Easing fluid congestion in the chest wall, armpits, and breast tissue

  • Stimulating circulation and lymph flow to help your body clear blockages

  • Soothing the nervous system, which supports hormone balance and milk letdown

Many clients tell me they leave feeling relieved, calmer, and better able to feed or pump comfortably again.

You Don’t Have to Struggle Alone

If you’re dealing with recurrent clogs, early mastitis, or just want support in your lactation journey, you don’t have to tough it out. I offer compassionate, hands-on care for both your body and your feeding goals.

Healing After a C-Section: Gentle Tips for a Smoother Recovery

By Anna Rademaker, LMT | Sacred Mama Denver

Whether your cesarean birth was planned or unexpected, your body just completed a major surgery and the miracle of bringing a baby into the world—at the same time. That’s no small thing.

As you adjust to life with a newborn, your own healing often gets pushed to the side. But caring for your recovery is just as important as caring for your baby. A supported healing journey helps you feel more present, connected, and physically comfortable as you move into this new chapter.

5 Gentle Tips to Support Your C-Section Recovery

1. Rest Like It’s Your Job

Easier said than done, but your body needs real rest to rebuild tissue, close incisions, and regulate hormones. Prioritize naps, accept help, and let go of the “bounce back” pressure.

2. Nourish with Healing Foods

Focus on warm, easy-to-digest meals like soups, stews, and bone broth. Your body needs protein, healthy fats, and plenty of hydration to rebuild after surgery and childbirth.

3. Move Mindfully

Gentle walks and slow, supported movement help promote circulation, reduce stiffness, and support your mood. No crunches or core work yet—your abdominal wall is still healing.

4. Embrace Belly Support

Postpartum wraps or binders can provide comfort and light compression in the early weeks. Just make sure they aren’t too tight—gentle support is key.

5. Try Lymphatic Drainage Massage

After a C-section, the body naturally responds with swelling and fluid retention—especially around the abdomen and incision site. Lymphatic drainage massage can gently stimulate circulation, reduce swelling, relieve pressure, and help you feel more like yourself again.

It’s a calming, non-invasive way to support recovery that also helps ease stress, promote sleep, and encourage hormone balance.

Why Lymphatic Massage After C-Section Works

  • Reduces post-surgical swelling and bloating

  • Improves mobility and comfort in your core

  • Supports immune function during a time of high vulnerability

  • Calms the nervous system to reduce stress and overwhelm

  • Promotes tissue repair and may help with early scar tissue formation

Most clients describe feeling lighter, more relaxed, and less sore—even after one session.

You Deserve Support, Too.

At Sacred Mama Denver, I specialize in postpartum care that honors your body and your birth experience. Whether you’re weeks or months out from your cesarean, it’s never too late to give your healing process the attention it deserves.

Why Lymphatic Massage Is a Game-Changer After Surgery

By Anna Rademaker, LMT | Sacred Mama Denver

Whether you've had a cosmetic procedure like liposuction or a medically necessary surgery like a C-section or hernia repair, one thing is true: your body needs time—and support—to heal.

One of the most powerful, yet often overlooked tools in recovery is lymphatic drainage massage. This gentle, specialized technique helps reduce swelling, speed up healing, and support your body as it works hard to repair itself.

Let’s take a closer look at why lymphatic massage is so effective for post-op care.

After surgery, your lymphatic system needs help.

Any time the body experiences trauma—like incisions, sutures, and inflammation—it responds by flooding the area with fluid to protect and begin healing. That swelling is part of the process, but too much fluid buildup can cause discomfort, tightness, bruising, and even delay your results.

The challenge? Your lymphatic system doesn’t have a built-in pump. It depends on movement and touch to keep things flowing. After surgery, you're likely resting or restricted in activity, which slows lymph flow dramatically.

This is where lymphatic massage comes in.

What is lymphatic drainage massage?

Lymphatic massage is a gentle, rhythmic technique designed to stimulate the flow of lymphatic fluid. It helps move excess fluid, reduce swelling, clear toxins, and support tissue repair—all without causing pain or disrupting healing incisions.

Unlike traditional massage, which works deep into muscles, lymphatic massage works with your body’s surface-level lymphatic network. It’s safe, calming, and incredibly effective in post-op care.

Key Benefits After Surgery:

  • Reduces swelling and fluid retention

  • Minimizes bruising

  • Improves comfort and mobility

  • Speeds up healing time

  • Supports scar tissue repair

  • Enhances your surgical results

Many clients tell me, “I finally feel like myself again—only better!” after just a few sessions.

My Post-Op Support Package

At Sacred Mama Denver, I offer a post-surgical massage membership designed specifically for recovery:

  • ✅ One 60-minute pre-op session to prep your body, set expectations, and walk you through post-op care

  • ✅ One 120-minute early post-op lymphatic session for swelling and fluid relief

  • ✅ Two 90-minute follow-up sessions to continue support as your body heals

All for $450 (valued at $640)—because healing well shouldn’t be out of reach.

Let’s Get You Feeling Better, Faster

If you’re preparing for or recovering from surgery, don’t wait until you're overwhelmed by swelling and discomfort. Lymphatic massage can make a profound difference in how you feel, how you heal, and how confident you are in your results.

Book your post-op support package today at sacredmamadenver.com

Why You Should Care About Your Lymphatic System (Even If You’ve Never Heard of It)

By Anna Rademaker, LMT | Sacred Mama Denver

Most of us grow up learning about the heart, lungs, and maybe even the digestive system. But the lymphatic system? That one doesn’t usually make it into everyday conversation—until something goes wrong.

Here’s the truth: your lymphatic system is one of the most important, and most overlooked, systems in your entire body. And when it’s working well, you feel it—calm, light, clear-headed, and balanced. When it’s not? You might feel bloated, sluggish, foggy, or even get sick more often.

Let’s change that.

So, what is the lymphatic system?

Your lymphatic system is your body’s natural detox and drainage network. It’s made up of a web of vessels, nodes, and fluid that clears out toxins, filters harmful substances, and supports your immune system. You can think of it like the body’s internal clean-up crew—constantly collecting waste and keeping things flowing.

What does it actually do for you?

  • Flushes toxins and waste from your tissues

  • Reduces swelling and puffiness by moving excess fluid

  • Supports digestion, nutrient absorption, and gut health

  • Boosts immunity—it’s literally part of your immune system!

  • Promotes healing after surgery, illness, or injury

  • Improves sleep, mood, and stress response

And here's something wild: about half of your lymph nodes live in your belly. That’s why abdominal swelling, sluggish digestion, or post-op healing issues can often be traced back to the lymphatic system.

What throws it off?

Unlike the heart, your lymphatic system doesn’t have a pump. It relies on movement—like muscle contractions, deep breathing, and massage—to keep fluid flowing. If you're dealing with stress, lack of movement, surgery recovery, or chronic inflammation, your lymph flow may be compromised.

How can you support it?

Simple daily practices can help:

  • Stay hydrated

  • Move your body regularly (walking, stretching, bouncing)

  • Deep breathing

  • Dry brushing

  • Lymphatic massage

The Power of Lymphatic Massage

Lymphatic massage is a gentle, rhythmic touch that stimulates your lymphatic flow—helping your body do what it does best: heal, restore, and detoxify.

At Sacred Mama Denver, I specialize in this deeply calming and effective technique. Whether you’re recovering from surgery, dealing with chronic bloating, or just looking for a reset, lymphatic massage can help you feel lighter, clearer, and more like yourself again.

Ready to support your body’s natural flow?

What Is an IBCLC—and Why You Should Meet One Before Baby Arrives

By Anna Rademaker, IBCLC, LMT | Sacred Mama Denver

You’re preparing for your baby—maybe decorating a nursery, picking out the perfect stroller, or taking a childbirth class. But what about preparing for feeding your baby?

Whether you plan to breastfeed, pump, combo feed, or aren’t quite sure yet, working with an IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant) can set you up for clarity, confidence, and a smoother postpartum journey.

Let’s explore what an IBCLC actually does, how we support families, and why connecting during pregnancy can make all the difference.

What Does an IBCLC Do?

IBCLCs are medical professionals trained in the clinical management of lactation. We’re more than just breastfeeding cheerleaders—we’re educators, troubleshooters, and compassionate guides through your feeding journey.

We help with:

  • Prenatal lactation education and planning

  • Latch and positioning support

  • Nipple pain, damage, or feeding discomfort

  • Low milk supply or oversupply

  • Pumping strategies (for work, NICU, or personal choice)

  • Weighted feeds to assess intake

  • Tongue tie concerns, bottle refusal, and more

Why Meet with an IBCLC During Pregnancy?

Meeting with an IBCLC before your baby arrives is like packing a map before the road trip. It doesn’t guarantee zero bumps, but it sure helps you feel confident navigating them.

Here’s how prenatal lactation support helps:

  • Learn what to expect in the early days of feeding

  • Understand how milk supply works and how to protect it

  • Get fitted for the right pump flange size (yes, it matters!)

  • Prepare for common challenges so they don’t feel scary

  • Get your support plan in place before you’re exhausted and hormonal

When families feel informed and supported before birth, they’re more likely to meet their feeding goals—whatever those look like for them.

Let’s Get You Set Up to Succeed

At Sacred Mama Denver, I offer prenatal lactation consults, postpartum support, and flange fittings—alongside therapeutic bodywork that helps you feel whole in this season of life.

Massage Therapy School

It all begins with an idea.

A Path to More Support for Mamas & Babies

When I made the decision to enroll in massage school, I felt a clear sense of purpose: I wanted to help mamas. My goal was to alleviate pregnancy pain, support their bodies in releasing for birth, and aid in postpartum healing. Eventually, I envisioned diving into pelvic floor therapy post-graduation, an area that profoundly impacts women's health but is often overlooked. I knew this journey would be challenging—but I had no idea just how transformative it would become. I enrolled in the yearlong program at Colorado School of Healing Arts.

A Challenge Like No Other

Physically, massage school pushed me to my limits. Learning the techniques required incredible stamina and focus, often leaving my body sore and exhausted. Beyond the physicality, the academic workload was intense. Anatomy and physiology felt like an insurmountable mountain of knowledge to absorb and retain. Every muscle, nerve, and system demanded attention, and the sheer volume of information was overwhelming at times.

But what truly blindsided me was the emotional work required. I wasn’t prepared for the way this experience would dig deep into my own vulnerabilities, forcing me to confront doubts and fears I’d been carrying for years. There were moments when I questioned everything: my purpose, my abilities, and even my desire to continue. Yet, as painful as those moments were, they became the crucial for my growth.

The Emotional Work: Growth and Transformation

The emotional challenges didn’t just test me; they transformed me. I grew in ways I never imagined. I learned to trust myself, to lean into discomfort, and to embrace vulnerability. I discovered that the emotional work wasn’t a side effect of the program—it was an integral part of becoming a healer. Massage isn’t just about the body; it’s about connecting with people on a deeply human level. To do that, I first had to connect with myself.

A Tribe of Support

One of the most unexpected gifts of this journey was finding my tribe. My fellow students were nothing short of amazing. Each of them brought unique strengths, perspectives, and warmth to our shared experience. Together, we laughed, cried, and supported each other through every challenge. I came to love and admire every single one of them.

The faculty members were equally inspiring. Their passion, expertise, and compassion created an environment where we could thrive. They embodied heart-opening beauty, showing us not only how to excel as massage therapists but also how to lead with kindness and integrity. I am forever grateful for their guidance.

Looking Ahead

As I near the end of this chapter, I feel immense gratitude for the journey. It wasn’t easy—far from it. But the challenges shaped me into a stronger, more empathetic person. I am now more determined than ever to support mamas through pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. I look forward to continuing my education in pelvic floor therapy, knowing that this work has the power to transform lives.

Massage school was harder than I ever imagined, but it was also more rewarding than I could have dreamed. To anyone considering a similar path: it’s not easy, but it’s worth it. Growth often comes from the hardest places, and I’m walking away with a full heart, a new set of tools to help and serve others, and a deeper connection to my purpose.

Here’s to the journey—and to helping others on theirs.

Journey to Becoming an IBCLC

My love for lactation began when I was pregnant with my first baby in 2011. By the spring of 2012, I attended my first La Leche League (LLL) meeting, a decision that would profoundly shape my life. Walking into that room, I felt like an imposter. I was pregnant and knew next to nothing about breastfeeding, but I was curious—could I really do it? To my relief, the dozen mothers and their babies were warm and welcoming, openly sharing their experiences.

The group leader, Austin, who later became my mentor, was calm, gracious, and understanding. She created a space where I felt truly comfortable, a rare experience for me. Growing up as a tomboy, I’d avoided traditionally "girly" activities and found relationships with girls untrustworthy. Yet, here I was, embraced by a circle of women who showed me the power of support and solidarity. It was at this meeting that I began my journey into vulnerability and discovered my passion for women supporting one another and my deep respect for lactation.

At that first meeting, I met Brenda, who became one of my best friends and a key member of our "triple mama group." Month after month, I eagerly attended LLL meetings, soaking in the learning, sharing, and growing. When my first baby arrived, I quickly realized I had no idea what I was doing. Admitting my cluelessness was hard, but I leaned into the support of the group. Determined and encouraged, I got the hang of breastfeeding. My baby thrived, my confidence grew, and I began a deep dive into the world of lactation.

Nine months into my breastfeeding journey, I started training to become a La Leche League leader. I ran meetings, hosted events, and organized community gatherings. Helping mothers, babies, and families became a calling. I also worked with fathers, teaching them how to support their growing families. With each interaction, my passion deepened. By the time our second baby arrived, I had gained valuable experience and a profound sense of purpose. My heart swelled with pride as I supported families and witnessed their growth.

When our youngest child reached school age, I decided to take the next step: becoming an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC). The path was far from easy. One of my biggest hurdles was Statistics (honestly it was the self doubt), a class I had failed twice in college. Facing it again was daunting, but I pushed through. Adapting to online learning platforms and navigating digital textbooks added another layer of challenge. There were moments when I felt completely overwhelmed, questioning whether I could keep going.

Then came 2020. The COVID-19 pandemic turned our world upside down. Our kids began remote learning, and life became incredibly stressful. My dreams of pursuing lactation work had to be put on hold. A year later, I picked up where I left off. Over 100 hours of lactation courses, 1,000 clinical hours supporting mothers and babies, and countless college and graduate classes later, I was ready to sit for the IBCLC exam.

As the exam approached, self-doubt crept in. On the day of the test in March 2023, I sat for the three-hour exam feeling panicked. In the months that followed, I convinced myself that I had failed. I tried to be patient and not dwell on it, but deep down, I worried. I didn’t have a backup plan. All the time, money, resources, and sleepless nights spent studying after my kids went to bed weighed heavily on my mind.

Finally, in July, the results arrived. I opened the letter from the certifying board and stared in shock: I had passed. It was official. I was an IBCLC. I couldn’t believe it. I immediately called my sister and my two best friends from La Leche League to share the news. I had doubted myself so many times, but I did it.

Looking back, I’m amazed by how far I’ve come. Those women at my first La Leche League meeting held me up when I needed it most. Leading meetings and hearing mothers share their stories of doubt, worry, and triumph inspired me to keep going, even when the path was hard. Along the way, I grew into a new version of myself—more confident, open-hearted, and vulnerable.

Becoming an IBCLC is just the beginning. The opportunities to serve families and support mothers are endless, and my heart is full of gratitude for this work. I am so proud of the shy, uncertain, pregnant woman I was at that first meeting. This career allows me to give back and help others, and I couldn’t be happier.
