Why "Pump and Dump" is Outdated

By Anna Rademaker, IBCLC, LMT | Sacred Mama Denver

You may have heard "pump and dump" — the idea that you must pump your milk and throw it away after drinking alcohol. The truth? This advice is outdated and not backed by current science!

Here’s how it works: Alcohol passes freely into breastmilk at levels similar to your blood alcohol level. Your body does not store alcohol in milk — as your blood alcohol level drops, so does the alcohol level in your milk. Studies show that after a standard drink (like a 5 oz glass of wine), the peak alcohol level in breastmilk is about 0.02% to 0.04% — far less than what’s in juice or a ripe banana!

Your body makes milk by filtering components from your blood, not by dumping what you drank directly into your milk. Just like your liver processes alcohol in your bloodstream, it naturally reduces the alcohol in your milk over time. The American Academy of Pediatrics and La Leche League both agree: moderate drinking is compatible with breastfeeding, and there’s rarely any need to pump and dump.

Instead of tossing milk, simply wait about 2–3 hours per drink — and nurse when you feel sober. No need to waste that liquid gold!
